Weekend Preview

This weekend we have a movie for almost every demographic: women, fanboys and men. Our first wide release comes in the form of a book into film. We have Elizabeth Gilberts 5 million in print bestseller ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ starring the actress of the ’90′s Julia Roberts. Women will undoubtedly flock to this. It’s been advertised everywhere, Oprah took time off from ordering Gayle around to dedicate a full show to the film and the book and Roberts and Gilbert. ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ was an Oprah book club selection, if you didn’t know, so the fanbase, well it’s loyal, as it’s the Oprah fanbase. The film itself has received mixed reviews. Director Ryan Murphy (Glee, Niptuck) has provided nice scenery but lacks the “depth” of the novel. I am interested in seeing this if mostly for the travel and food scenes, and I’d rather support Julia Roberts then watch an episode of Jersey Shore. This will probably come in second for the weekend, with $25+ million.

Next we have what everyone has been waiting for. The mash up of botox, steroids and herpes… I mean all the action stars of the 90′s and 00′s together for one big ol’ sausage fest. This has also, surprisingly (in a positive way) recieved mixed reviews. I am interested in seeing all the boys together, it looks like a lot of fun, and trash and douchebagery but what else would one expect? Should be a good time. This will probably gain the top spot of the weekend with around $40+ million.

And lastly we have the film I’m personally most excited for, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. This adaptation is brought to us by Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun Of The Dead) so even though the reviews have been good and the comic-con reception was reportedly wild, this beloved manga series is in good hands. Today I finished the 6th book of the series, which is like a series of Krispy Kream donuts – they’re flashy, sugary, sometimes gives you a head rush from all the adrenaline, but you can’t help but want more right after you finish one of them. It is just so much fun, so entertainingly addictive and also makes a lot of Canadian readers very proud. The series is all set in Toronto, with mentions of actual landmarks and the movie was filmed in Toronto, as Toronto, and shows off the landmarks, which is a draw in and of itself. Now this film is directed to a VERY niche audience, because I bet you, if you were to talk to anyone about it and their thoughts, who aren’t fans, they’ll claim it looks stupid – but they have to leave because they have to be home to watch Jersey Shore. Anyways, this will probably do around $15+ million.
